What are Dermal Fillers?

Injectable dermal fillers (injectable cosmetic fillers, injectable facial fillers) like JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®, are soft tissue fillers injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother appearance. Most of these wrinkle fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body. Dermal fillers may be used to correct a variety of cosmetic concerns, such as wrinkles, thin lips, acne scars, sagging skin, and undereye areas. Some people may need more than one injection to achieve the wrinkle-smoothing effect.



What is in the Dermal Fillers?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the most popular ingredients used in dermal fillers. It is a natural substance found in the body, and high concentrations can be found in soft, connective tissues and the fluid around the eyes. Lower concentrations can also be found in some cartilage, joint fluids, and skin tissue. HA is the base for Juvederm, Belotero, Perlane, and Restylane.



What is the process?

First, we will sit down with you to see what areas you are concerned about. Your skin will be cleaned and numbing ointment will be applied. Once ready, injections will be made followed by manual massaging/molding to assure the filler shape is optimal.



What is recovery like?

Recovery from dermal filler injections is a fairly simple process. You will most likely experience swelling and bruising. Avoiding strenuous activity for 24-48 hours and icing the injection site can help minimize swelling. It is also common to experience temporary numbness, redness, or lumps at the injection site.



How long do results last?

The effect lasts anywhere from six months up to two years with some fillers.



What are the risks and side effects of Dermal Fillers?

Though unlikely, risks include infection, filler irregularity or migration, small granulomas, and tissue necrosis. Read your consent thoroughly for a full list of possible side effects.
